It is known that the process of storage of urine in bladder until it’s time to urinate and also the process of urination and emptying bladder  both need muscular and nervous harmonization  between bladder muscles and nerves of the bladder, and between them and the muscles and nerves of the urinary sphincter .

Therefore, any disease affecting the muscles and nerves of the urinary bladder or urinary sphincter lead to an imbalance in the process of storing urine or urination.

And to have a proper treatment, it is required in these cases the evaluation and the measurement of  the ability of muscles and nerves in the bladder and urinary sphincter until the proper diagnosis and selection of proper method of treatment, hence the need for urodynamic study, which its most important functions:

1 – Measuring the urine flow during urination.

2 – Measuring the pressure inside the bladder during urine storage and during urination.

3 – Measuring the pressure inside the urethra and the urinary sphincter and between the vulnerable areas in the urethra, which cause urinary incontinence.

4 – Measuring the muscles strength of the urinary sphincter.

Among the most important diseases that used the urodynamic study include the following:

1 – Urinary incontinence cases in women after difficult deliveries and in men after prostatectomy and in children in case of bedwetting.

2 – In case of need of prostatectomy in diabetes patients and also in cases of older people who suffer from some neurological diseases to evaluate the strength of the urinary sphincter, to avoid the occurrence of urinary incontinence after the operation.

3 – In cases of Neurogenic bladder of various causes and types which include the reflection of different neurological diseases on all organs of the body including the urinary bladder.

4 – Cases of nerves paralysis, hemiplegia, paraplegia and quadriplegia as well as in cases of the spine fractures to see the extent of the lower urinary tract affected by such diseases as well as cases of Parkinson’s disease and its effect on the bladder.
