Treatment for Nocturnal Enuresis at Kuwaiti German Urology Unit, Kuwait

Bed-wetting also called as Nocturnal Enuresis is involuntary urination while the child or adult is in the state of sleep. In case of child, bed-wetting usually occurs after the age when a child should be able to control his or her bladder during sleep.

Children, including adults, affected with the disorder of nocturnal enuresis might possess lower bladder capacity, urinary urgency during daytime, frequent urination or incontinence of urine, excessive nocturnal urine production and also poor sleep arousal.

“The principal causes for nocturnal enuresis is obliviously the lack of anti-diuretic hormone or ADH, low-levels of ADH signifies too much urine production during sleep. This hormonal imbalance along with other factors like smaller bladder, hereditary factors, sleep arousal issues, caffeine, alcohol & other kind of diuretic substances, injuries, psychological issues & medical conditions like diabetes, constipation, urinary tract abnormalities and urinary tract infections work together to aggravate the symptoms of nocturnal involuntary urination,” mentioned Dr. Ali Mehdi Zadeh, Consultant Urologist and Head of Kuwaiti German Urology Unit.

Dr. Ali further adds “It is sensible to limit fluid intake before going to bed in-order to prevent bladder from getting filled with urine during sleep, plus, it is advisable to urinate just before the bedtime. Some foods like chocolate, coffee and various other kinds of caffeinated drinks, carbonated beverages, tea and alcoholic drinks exacerbate the amount of urine that pile-up inside the bladder during the night hours. ADH supplements will decrease urine build-up during sleep and in combination with prescription medicines that promises bladder relaxation, allowing it to hold more urine – offering a peaceful event-free night in the process. “
