Urinary Obstruction affects both men & women of all ages, according to Dr. Ali Mehdi Zadeh
Obstructive Uropathy or most commonly known as Urinary Obstruction is a medical disorder related to the urinary system which can be explained in layman’s terms as obstruction of the urinary flow along the urinary tract and the hindrance to the urine passage might be located at any point in the urinary tract from the renal calyces to the external urethral meatus, affecting both men and women of all ages.
“The obstruction to the urine flow can be either partial or complete and in case of complete urinary obstruction urine flows backward, or refluxes, into the kidneys and this kind of impediment is quite lethal on the affected individual and the result is the inflammation & other kind of major damage to either one or both the kidneys and subsequently will require immediate medical attention. Milder form of indications for obstructive uropathy has the potential to cause dilation of ureter & bladder, urinary tract infection (UTI), nausea, vomiting, fever, stone formation due to urinary stasis and even bouts of severe pain, when the obstacle is acute,” mentioned Dr. Ali Mehdi Zadeh, Consultant Urologist and Head of Kuwaiti German Urology Unit.
In aged men, urinary obstruction is more pronounced due to prostatic enlargement, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or urethral stricture.
Dr. Ali mentioned that pregnancy-induced obstructive uropathy is a rare form of obstruction that affects pregnant women when foetus in its unnatural position presses down on the bladder, thereby causing urine reflux or backward urine flow.
“The other kind of notable causes in women might include pelvic & other kind of gynaecological tumours, prolapsed of pelvic structures and urethral tract obstructions due to various other factors that even affect men like bladder neck obstruction, blood clot, pinhole meatus, calculi, neurogenic bladder, spinal injuries, pancreatitis and retrocaval ureter. “
“The treatment for obstructive uropathy is obiviously involves removal of obstruction from the blocked ureters like stenting the urinary tract with a catheter and catheterization at Kuwaiti German Urology Unit is a minimally invasive, safe, efficient and swift procedure. Occasionally, the treatment also involves in full-fledged surgery to remove cancerous tumors and polyps – paving way for free and unobstructed passage of urine into the bladder,” added Dr. Ali.
